  • disc degeneration

  • infection (spondylodiscitis)

  • spine tumor

  • non-orthopedic problems: kidney and digestive organs

 

Modic changes

  1. Modic 1: disruption and fissuring of endplates and formation of a fibrovascular granulation tissue. Inflammatory stage

  2. Modic 2: fatty degeneration of the red marrow and its replacement by yellow marrow. Fatty stage

  3. Modic 3: sclerotic stage
